People love to sign up for our tour then show up with all kinds of footwear, everything from slippers to cowboy boots. I know how we all love our old comfortable hiking shoes that fit oh so good, but for this advanced lava hike you must inspect them well before attempting to make this 5.5 mile round trip over heated lava tubes. The lava is very sharp and takes it’s toll on those old dry rotted boots you broke out of the closet just before your trip.
You must take care and beware of your footwear so that you can enjoy this hike to it’s fullest! Just last night on our hike back out from the ocean entry, I had to stop and break out a roll of duct tape (Thank God For Duct Tape) and repair a pair of old hiking boots after Bob had walked the soles off of them. believe it or not we’ve patched and duct taped about 9 pairs of shoes in the last 2 years.
Choose your footwear wisely!
The hazards of footwear can spoil a good hike fast, when it comes to crossing over HOT Lava tubes, silicon glass, and warm vents. The old fashioned sneakers are a preferred hiking shoe for people on vacation, but don’t be fooled they glue the layers on the sole and the heat from under your feet can loosen the glue and off with the shoe.
Comfort is one of the most important factors, but not the only one so be sure to inspect and select what works for you. You must also remember that if your shoes don’t last the entire trip or they can’t handle the rocks it’s a long way back in just your socks. I recommend you choose them wisely and enjoy your trip without slip, cause you don’t want to break a hip!! So check your gear and will see you’re here.
