“One of the COOLEST Things I’ve Ever Done!”
Went on an afternoon hike with Poke-a-Stick in Feb. One of the reasons I went to Big Island was to visit the volcanoes and see lava flow. We couldn’t see lava flow from the National Park, so was encouraged by our hotel to book a guided hike with Poke-a-Stick. We could not have asked for a better recommendation. The tour owner and our guide, Cheryl, was FANTASTIC! We set off on our tour around 3:45 pm and returned by 8:30 pm. The hike is definitely an intermediate level hike and proper shoes are a must….also bring plenty of water. The day we went, we saw the amazing lava flow along our hike and then again as we continued towards the see cliff.
As the sun started setting, the glow of the lava flowing into the ocean illuminated the sky. We were watching land being formed right in front of our eyes — simply breathtaking. Perhaps it was just me, but I found the hike back at night really cool. My level of concentration was so intense, yet I knew and felt that I was surrounded by hardened lava flow. The tour was by far my greatest highlight of my 3 island tour. We absolutely recommend this hike to those looking for a little adventure.
“An Essence of Hawaii”
I can’t think of enough positive adjectives to describe this tour experience. As a local born & raised on Oahu and having spent significant time on all the main islands of Hawaii, I’ve done the majority of things to do in the state. This was one new experience and one of the best and most beautiful sights I’ve seen. Being able to get as close as possible (I got to a foot away before having to pull away because of the extreme heat) to active lava, seeing the vibrant colors, and watching lavafalls enter the ocean was an unforgettable experience and simply majestic.
Be prepared for an intermediate level hike on uneven terrain; and don’t forget a camera. The hike to get to that endpoint was guided by Cheryl and Scott, which was a great workout, educational, and fun. They are well prepared, well planned, and a pleasure to be around with all the aloha spirit they exude. They genuinely care about your safety and that you have an amazing time. Just an overall great and entertaining time, including the occasional corny joke from Scott, which added to the fun.
“Is There Something Better than Poking a Stick in Lava?”
Cheryl and Scott were our guides on the 4 mile round trip hike. We got to see several surface flows and water entries. We were a smaller group of 5 for the evening. Scott and Cheryl was humorous and professional, telling stories and sharing facts about eruptions and how it affected the land, themselves and their neighbors. All in all a great tour.
Now… Let me explain what makes this worth the $100. My wife and I each had a stick in our hands, we walked up to flowing lava…. and poked it. I will not remember the $100 dollars we spent to go on the trip, but I will never, ever forget poking a freakin’ stick into flowing lava. GO ON THIS TOUR!!!
“The Only Company that was Going that Day”
I can’t say enough good about this company. I had booked a hike with another company but they called to cancel it due to rain. So I scrambled to get another hike booked and thankfully Poke-a-stick was still hiking! Boy this was quite the experience. Hiked about 4 miles round trip and the guides were equipped with whatever we might need while out there (emergency water, bandaids, flashlights, etc). I learned a lot about lava flow, both old and new. We took frequent enough breaks to where I didn’t get too tired or winded. The hike really isn’t all that hard if you just keep your eyes on where you are going.
Now for the lava – it was flowing great while we were there. Got to see the flow and I got as close as the temperatures would allow me to get! Stuck a stick in it, got lots of photos, and then we walked a few more yards to get to the safe viewing spot for the ocean entry flow. What power! It was quite a show – seeing the lava hit the water and all of the steam coming up. Sometimes you could see the smoking lava rocks flowing out with the receding of the wave. We had plenty of time at the lava and we stayed after the sunset so we could get some great photos in the dark.
Highly recommend this hiking tour group! Been there, done that AND got the t-shirt!

“Best Tour I’ve Ever Done”
Me and my wife traveled to Hawaii all the way from Colombia for our honeymoon. My main expectation was to get to see lava during the trip. We did the helicopter trip and later that day went for the hike. This hike is the REAL THING. You really get to poke a stick into it, hear it when it makes contact with the ocean, and feel its heat in a way no other tour is capable of. Best 100 bucks I’ve ever spent. Cheryl and Scott are with you all the way answering every question, and are always checking on the Hydration of the people and the flashlights at the return on the evening tour. If we go back to Hawaii we would definitely do the hike again!!
